Gaggenau’s oven series 400/200 includes following product family: double oven, ovens, microwave ovens, steam ovens and a fully automatic espresso machine. It was our task to develop and design a holistic user interface that works across this variety of products. Working with the UI designers from Gaggenau, we took great care to create a harmonious balance of the rotary knob’s haptic qualities and precise graphics on the display.

We developed an intelligent animation for the interface module of the oven series 400 and 200 which supports intuitive use: information is magnified to focus on information that the user is interacting with, while scaling information down again when it is less relevant for the user – creating a positive effect from a perceptive-psychological perspective. This scaling helps understand the interplay of the knobs with the functions communicated on the display, allowing the user to directly interact with the main functions through turning the knobs. Furthermore, the user is faced with a clearly laid out graphical user interface on the TFT-display that provides additional functions. Next to the scaling principle, qualities of the user orientation derive through the subtle use of colour which accentuates single steps of use. This holistic concept and design, embedding the same use qualities across all those different products also convinced the committee of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2013.
